Morgans Wood has been described by the Forestry Commission as “unusually diverse” in that we have so many different species of trees within the twelve acres such as Oak, Ash, Field Maple, Hornbeam, Elder, Hawthorn, Elm, Hazel, Scots Pine, Norwegian Spruce, Larch, Birch, Spindle and Service trees.
Ground flora includes Blue Bells, St John’s Wort, Horse Tail, Wood Sorrel, primroses, wild rose, cow slips, foxgloves, brambles and about 30 different types of mushroom in the autumn.
As for the animals, well, we have many Buzzards which are often seen on a sunny day screaming at the sun, Owls, Cuckoos, Woodpeckers and wrens in abundance, not to mention snakes, rabbits, mice, pheasants, roe deer, foxes and badgers. We have also introduced a few hives of honey bees which are doing really well and we hope to start pulling off some honey in the next year.
